The German composer, Bernhard Krol, completed his musical studies in Berlin before going on to complete them with Arnold Schoenberg's disciple, Josef Rufer, in Vienna (horn and composition).
Bernhard Krol's career as a professional instrumentalist afforded him a special idiomatic knowledge of brasses. He was successively a horn player with the Staatskapelle Berlin (1945-1962), the Berliner Philharmoniker (1961-1962) and with the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (until 1967).
In his compositions Bernhard Krol uses the tonal system, looking back towards composers such as Max Reger or Paul Hindemith. His music is characterized by a freshness of music-making, marked rhythms and, as he once said, 'heaven's gift of the beauty of sound'

He was anti-fascist in his youth and tried everything not participate in the Hitler regime. To avoid going to war, he taught himself French horn that he could join the military band. At the same time studied French horn and composition with Josef Rufer in Vienna.
After the war he continued as a musician at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and with the growing closeness of the iron curtain, he had to quit his job and became a member of the radio orchestra Stuttgart.
After his retirement he focused on his compositions and his huge family. Together with his wife he raised 11 children and was a lovely grandfather for his 23 grandchildren.
