By looking at works composed in West and East Germany between 1949 and 1989, Voices Beyond the Wall highlights compositions from divided Germany. 

 

By recording underperformed/unrecorded works, this project creates a platform where they can be accessed as reference recordings.

During my thesis research in my undergraduate degree, I discovered that a tremendous gap in the availability of classical music from the German Democratic Republic (GDR) exists.

 

To me, this brought up questions about the role of music preservation in national identity and memory.

 

Why were pieces from this time period

impossible to find and how does that connect to the cultural preservation of divided and reunified Germany?
